"BREAKING NEWS - Mackey to resign as Lady Bulldogs head coach

By SCSU Sports Information | Friday, February 01, 2008

South Carolina State head women‘s basketball coach Tonya Mackey has resigned her duties effective June 30th, Bulldog athletics director Charlene Johnson announced Friday.

Mackey, who is in her fourth season as Lady Bulldog head coach, will coach the team through the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament at Raleigh, NC Mar. 10-15, and will then be placed on administrative leave until June 30th, according to Johnson.

Mackey, an SC State graduate, has a career record of 36-67 at her alma mater. The current team is 6-11 overall and 3-3 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

""We are very appreciative of the service Coach Mackey has rendered to the university and the women‘s basketball program,"" said Johnson, ""and wish her well in any future endeavors.

""We will begin an immediate search for a successor.""

Mackey has served as women‘s head coach at SC State since the 2004-05 campaign when she succeeded Keisha Campbell. Prior to being elevated to the top post, she spent seven seasons as an assistant coach for the Lady Bulldogs.

She previously was an assistant for two seasons at Kentucky State and girl‘s head coach at Johnson High School in Savannah, Ga, her native city.

As a player at SC State, she earned three letters and served as team captain during her senior year."

probably the fact that she was on a 4 year contract, and through this her 4th season, had never produced a winning record, and she new that contract wasnt gonna get renewed...

so now we are looking for new candidates.....I aint saying no names, but there is a coach in the CIAA and one in the SIAC that many of our alumni are targeting...

personally, I think we should include those 2 AND several more in a national search and pick the best one...

I‘m sure Coach Bibbs  would never leave A&T after she‘s built a  solid program there. I would assume the coach from the SIAC would be Coach Bartley at FVSC. Not sure who in the CIAA Tucker or Curtis being that they are the only ones that have won a championship in the CIAA.

I don‘t think so, Bartley is the cream of the SIAC, when it comes to winning. No one in that league I has  done what he has  done.
