Ga. lawmakers urge a college football playoff system
House votes to push NCAA to set it up

Associated Press
Published on: 02/01/08

Georgia lawmakers briefly turned aside from issues like the drought, gun control and transportation on Friday to voice their displeasure with college football‘s Bowl Championship Series system.

The state House voted 151-9 Friday to urge the NCAA to create a playoff system for college football, adopting a resolution that calls the current system ""dysfunctional.""

""The only major sporting event without a playoff system to identify its true champion that I know of is NCAA Division 1 football,"" said state Rep. Quincy Murphy, D-Augusta.

Georgia was ranked fourth in the BCS entering the last week of the season, behind Missouri, West Virginia and Ohio State. When Missouri and West Virginia lost, Georgia did not rise to second behind Ohio State but dropped to fifth in the BCS. Southeastern Conference champion LSU vaulted from seventh to second.

The Bulldogs went on to rout previously undefeated Hawaii 41-10 in the Sugar Bowl.

The resolution, which now goes to the Senate, calls the BCS system ""the greatest disappointment of the 2007 college football season.""

""The only sensible way to determine a national champion in any sport is to develop a playoff system that allows teams to meet on the field,"" the resolution reads. ""The fans of college football deserve a true national champion to be crowned after winning the title on the field of play and not in a popularity poll.""

There has been growing momentum here for a playoff system since Georgia‘s football ended with its convincing victory over Hawaii.

Michael Adams, the president of the University of Georgia, proposed an eight-team playoff system last month to determine the NCAA‘s national football champion. He said the current system is ""undercutting the sportsmanship and integrity of the game.""

When I read this earlier this morning, my thoughts were that the GA Legislature has more than enough work to do than worry about the BCS.  One would be properly funding education......  shrug

Good point. It amazes me that lawmakers has all this free time to do this stuff, while they should be making our country better

no   no

If they were to get a playoff system & GA was #1 going into the playoffs only to get their azzes handed to them in the first round, those same folks will be talking about how they miss the BCS format....

Meanwhile, state government workers have to fight for a even a little piece of a raise, yet they‘ve got money to waste manpower on this....

When we say that UGA rules the state of GA, we mean it....

Lord have mercy  no

This just provides us with a clear picture of how big, how much pull and financial positioning the state flagship university has on many legislative issue in and outside the academic arena.

"This particular act hasn‘t affected our schools, but as Jafus alluded to, it‘s a prime example of how UGA influences state legislation and funding.  They get theirs and the rest of us get the crumbs...FVSU, ASU, & SSU don‘t even get the crumbs...we‘re just like Lazarus at the foot of the rich man‘s table with only the dogs there to lick our sores.

The session just began...you have issues with regard to education, agriculture, crime, and economics to deal with, yet you pass a resolution on a system that really has NOTHING to do with the state of GA outside of pride? The NCAA will probably give this ""resolution"" the proper amount of attention it needs...NONE.

If LSU were in UGA‘s position & UGA had won the national championship, these ""lawmakers"" would be saying stuff like, ""yall need to focus on the Katrina victims and let the NCAA handle this"".

I‘m sorry if I keep going on and on about this, but this BCS situation arose in December, the championship was decided in January, and they‘re passing resolutions in less than 30 days?  Exactly how long did it take for them to change the laws of statutory rape w/ regard to Genarlow Wilson and others that were in his position?  How many teeth did folks have to pull for them to even bring the issue to the floor?      Stuff like this pisses me OFF

I wouldn‘t have minded if UGA won it all, but this is just ri-damn-diculous

The hand that rocks the cradle rules the state...UGA is that hand."

JayT,

This is the point as VG pointed out in her post above.  If the legislators were focusing on the real issues, they would not be wasting those 90 days set aside for them to decide how to spend your tax dollars.  The majority of them are not worth their part time pay.  no

It is an election year.  Nothing much will get accomplished underneath the gold dome.      no

Oh My God!  I am in tears!  I Love This Dialouge!  I Say Let‘s Flex our political muscles and expose these arses.  And the Black Legislatures in Georgia aint no better.  They do nothing to push a legislative agenda for the HBCU‘s.  It‘s terrible.  Yet we wine them, dine them, and all of that foolishness.

I ain‘t gonna lie...................I‘m laughing my A$$ off at these guys. LSU is the champs...............get over it.  lol

Geaux Tigers!

But, at least they are trying to do something about it rather than what USC did four years ago or, Oregon 6 years ago....................that is, whine and cry rather than try to get someone to influence the process. Calling the champion illigitimate, when you agreed to the process for determing that champion, just makes you look like a sore loser.

Ivan, my issue is I want the same presidents, ADs, coaches that stood up in the media and whined and complained after they were shafted the year before to continue their banter even when their team is in the championship game.  That is all ask! Florida AD came out the year before when they got shafted and when Florida went to the championship the next year, you didn‘t hear anymore of the boycotting, so to speak. Same goes with Auburn.  Just be quiet if it is not going to benefit the entire Division I landscape in football, whether your team is in the championship game or not, to only speak on your school because they did not win the games when the opportunities presented itself.

that‘s all...

"Exactly. I agree!
But, in the case of USC and Oregon, what they need to be doing is getting there conference leadership to stop blocking the playoff system. If not, all Pac Ten and Big Ten teams need to shut the hay-ul up. They are the main advocates of this system. The SEC would welcome a playoff. And we all know why this is...............................................................  Wink"
