Lincoln and North Carolina Central women’s basketball teams team up to fight breast cancer

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (February 1, 2008) – Lincoln University of Pennsylvania and North Carolina Central University will participate in the Women‘s Basketball Coaches Association‘s (WBCA) Think Pink campaign to raise both money and awareness for the battle against breast cancer. The campaign will focus on games during the days of Feb. 8-17.

The visiting Eagles will wear pink uniforms while the host Lions will wear pink ribbons on their uniforms and pink T-shirts during their pregame warm-ups for the 5:30 p.m. contest at Manuel Rivero Hall on Friday February 8. The purpose of the Think Pink campaign is to increase the awareness of breast cancer and how it affects the community.

“We are delighted to be a part of the WBCA’s initiative to bring attention to this serious issue,” Lincoln women’s basketball coach Andy Haman said. “This is an event that I am thrilled to be a part of and it’s exciting for our University.”

Everybody attending the game will receive a pink ribbon courtesy of Lincoln’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC). Donations to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund in partnership with The V Foundation will be accepted and are encouraged. A moment of silence will be observed before the game in observance of all the victims who lost the fight against breast cancer. Fans attending the game will also be encouraged to wear pink.

“It is an honor to have the opportunity, to strive and to show that our young ladies are here to support the cause,” North Carolina Central women’s basketball coach Joli Robinson said.

The WBCA‘s ""Think Pink"" initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA‘s nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

“The WBCA is very excited to promote an initiative that touches all levels of our membership and unifies them for such a great cause,"" said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. “It has been remarkable to watch the support of this initiative grow from 120 schools last year to over 600 schools for 2008. With the help of each of our members, the women‘s basketball community can make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.”

Schools participating range from all divisions of NCAA play, NAIA, JC/CC, high school and AAU. The WBCA hopes to take this to professional and AAU/YBOA play over the summer.

Founded in 1854, Lincoln University is the first historically black institution of higher education and its graduates include such luminaries as Thurgood Marshall, the first African American justice of the United States Supreme Court, and acclaimed poet and author Langston Hughes.  Lincoln University is nationally regarded for producing African Americans with undergraduate degrees in the physical sciences."

Good job Lincoln and NCCU for bringing awareness to this disease to our young Sistas!.  It would be great if the four HBCU conferences picked up on this idea and have all women‘s schools do this once during the season.    clap
