"I think league officials (MEAC, SWAC, CIAA, SIAC, NCAAs) should rethink their ""noise"" rule restricting bands from playing immediately before the snap and/or while the ball is in play.  I attended the WSSU homecoming (vs. Del St.) It has gotten so bad, that the Del St. coaches tried to shut down their band from playing the school fight song just after they had scored a touchdown to tie the game. INCREDIBLE!

It gets worse: Both teams (plus the refs and the P.A. announcer) then tried to shut down the tubas from WSSU as they played a soft chant, challenging the Del St. tubas.

Can we get a grip, here?  Supposed the stadium crowd overshadowed the sound of the band. Would the home team get penalized?

I‘m very interested in other opinions on this argument, and I‘ll gladly debate any coach or player who believes the bands are a detriment to the game. Bring it on!"

"I don‘t see a problem with asking the band to be quiet right before a play is executed.  The team needs to be able to hear the snap count, and if they can‘t it could cause unnecessary penalties/possible turnovers that could affect the final outcome of the game, which is the ultimate reason for being there anyway.

You can‘t really control the crowd noise portion, but you can control the band playing...so I guess every little bit helps  shrug

Now getting upset b/c the band plays the fight song after a score is a bit extreme I must admit.  Bands are a very, very, very important part of the gameday experience. But the most important thing is the team...."

"The band is half the game at HBCUs.  The reason the band is not so important at PWCs is that most of the time their bands SUCK!!

The band should not play loudly when the other team has the ball.  The band should play loudly when their team scores.  The band should also play loudly when there is a break in the action (quarter, equipment malfunction, TV commercials, officical timeouts etc).

Bands are a great tradition at HBCUs.  We must not give up that tradition.  It is the secret of the excitement of HBCU football."

I am on the same stance as HouseRules.   shrug   I mean come on we should all make a ton of noise at our home fields.     There is no doubt this is where home court advantage comes from.  LOAD AND PROUD for your team.   clap   The visitors can‘t hear go to a silent count!  Cheesy

"Well what if they need to change the play at the line of scrimmage?  shrug

Look, I love to hear the bands play too...crowd noise is one thing, but I don‘t see anything wrong with asking the band to play a little quieter while the quarterback is under the center.  shrug"

"Askia,

I think everyone can agree that IF the bands would bring it down when the offense breaks the huddle, there would be no problem. Most of the SIAC bands seem to manage to do this. But there are some bands across all conferences that don‘t seem to do it and won‘t even bring it down when their coaches ask them to.

I know bandheads don‘t think it‘s fair but how fair is it to the team to be penalized for something they have absolutely no control over?    shrug  The band is always suppose to accent - not be a detriment."

Some refs and conference‘s which will remain nameless *cough CIAA cough* want you to cut all the way off sometimes.

They got hand signals.  There were times the wide out is not going to hear the change verbally so a hand signal will go along with it.

"I have to disagree with you on this one VG. If you cant control noise from crowd how can you ask the band to quiet it? If a QB cant get the snap count right because of crowd noise then the crowd gets props but its different for the bands?

The rule is a cheap and rather futile attempt to quiet the bands. If you cant get the snap count, might i suggest a quiet count. Falcons did it as well as other NFL teams and it has been shown to work so no I dont think bands are a detriment to the game.  shrug"

"Pm,

I believe there are rules re crowd noise - at least in the NFL. I think the team can get an unsportmanlike conduct penalty. I seem to recall this in an Eagles game a few years ago."

Now that is news to me.

I have NEVER seen that type of thing happen before. Ive seen teams suck it up and play and I have seen teams take time outs because of it but never seen an unsportsman like conduct call used because of crowd noise.

If the band is challenging the other band they are not helping the football team.  That is the problem with the HBCU bands.  They don‘t play for the team they play for themselves.  That is the problem.

When does the crowd challenge the visiting crowd?  Get the point?

If the band can‘t support the team they need to be quiet.  Let the crowd take over.  They do a better job anyway."
