"Are we there yet?

Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, I lived in a neighborhood that had no segregation in the city of New York.  We were all part of the can family.  Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Jamaicans, Costa Ricans, Dominicans, Causicans, African"

"good, thought provoking question....

on the surface, one can say that as a people, no, we have not arrived at the promise land, en masse.  in actuality, we‘ve probably digressed in some areas and improved greatly in others.  we‘re more fragmented today than we were in teh 60‘s.  we are less unified and unwilling to help each other today.

but you must envision what MLK saw as the promised land.  it could have been the eradication of jim crow laws.  it could have been ending desegregation.  it could have been employment for all.  it could be defined simply as being able to vote in elections.  all of which, we are afforded today.

i feel we‘ve taken a few steps forward and a couple of steps backwards.  are we there yet?  it depends on your definition of ""there""."

"Let us keep in mind we‘ve still got some difficult days ahead but we, as a people, will get to the next peak just look where we come from and where we are now. Look at where we were on April 3rd and where we are now. Let us not forget how hopeless it was, how hopeless it could be and how much advancement it will be if we keep fighting for it the way we have in the past. Let us not let others play down how for we have come and how for we will go. Some say we are still slaves in some ways. This may be true but it‘s got to be better than what my grandmother and grandfather and my mother and father had to do what I am doing. Stop looking at you want for a second and be thankful for what you have. So you can see the Promised Land. And If we were there we would stop dreaming."

"Dawg...

Perhaps you could be a little more definitive in terms of ""there""...

In my meager world, we ARE NOT THERE. Certainly a couple of doors have opened - but at what cost?   shrug"
